Understanding WIBA: Protecting employees in Kenya

What is WIBA?
WIBA stands for **Work Injury Benefits Act**. It is a mandatory insurance policy that every employer in Kenya must offer his employees as per the Work Injury Benefits Act (WIBA) of 2007. The WIBA Act of 2007 requires that every employer, even an employer of one, must compensate their employees following any accidental injury or disease contracted during work or connected/related activities.

The Work Injury Benefits Act allows employees to claim medical expenses and lump sum compensation for temporary and permanent incapacity if any, or death. An employee is entitled to compensation under the Work Injury Benefits Act if he/she suffers a disability or dies in a work-related accident. All employers in Kenya should compensate employees for injuries or their beneficiaries/dependants in case of death arising out of diseases that are caused by the nature of work and in the course of employment. As it is mandated by law, WIBA includes all employees, including nannies, caregivers, house helpers, drivers and gardeners.
